Trying to decide on an 8" slow speed grinder betwee the Rikon,Powertech and Wen. All are in the 1/2 HP group and all priced between $100 and $150 depending where you buy. Ebay has the Rikon at both prices from diff. sources and all listed as new. My only experience is with my Craftsman 6" high speed bench grinder. What do you guys suggest out of the three. I can't step up to a higher priced unit at this time. Thanks for the help. Geo.

Are you hoping to use CBN wheels?

No experience with the Wen brand. I do have a Rikon 1 hp grinder and for the money you won't get a better deal. I consider the 1/2 hp grinder to be a bit under powered. I believe Ken Rizza of Woodturerswonders had deals on the Rikon grinders and sets of CBN wheels. Might be worth checking out. Woodcraft also has 'sales' of the Rikon grinders. Your local big box store might have them too.

I bought the 1/2HP Rikon grinder a couple of years ago. I just put one of Ken Rizza's CBN wheels on it last week and it does quite well. I think, based on the demos I've seen, the biggest difference between 1/2HP and 1HP is how quickly the grinder gets up to speed when you turn it on.

The Rikon 1/2hp works great, I have the Wolverine jig set up with a 180 and 350 grit CBN wheel and have not had any problem with it bogging down. Puts an amazing edge on the chisels, and it’s currently on sale although last month they had it for 89.99.
