Tool cleaning

Turning very green wood I have noticed a build up in the flute  and on the relieve bevel of my bowl gouge. Looks like sawdust and sap that gets hard as a rock. What do y’all use to keep you’re tools shiney. I have tried wd40 but anything short of steel wool won’t touch it.

While turning I just wiped off the buildup when I noticed it.  But it apparently traps bits of tool dust, perhaps from sharpening, and my fingers left black stains on some woods, especially red oak and maple.  A black streak on the bowl blank now reminds me to use a small stiff brush to wipe off the buildup.

Most of the time I don't worry about it unless it gets really bad. Madrone does leave a lot of sticky gunk on the tools. I keep a wire wheel on one of my grinders, and it only takes seconds to clean it up. If it is sap, then mineral spirits or any solvent will take it off. Not sure how good the hand cleaners are though.

As for metal dust on the wood, I use a light tap on the work bench for a freshly sharpened tool, and also wipe my hands and the tool on the wet wood shavings. That gets most of the dust.

For sap cleanup, use Turpentine.  It is distilled from Pine sap.

I have only had to clean sap from my tools once and before it got hard I wiped it off and in the end DNA to finish it.  I clean all tools before I am done for the day and sharpen them to.
That way I always walk in and use clean sharp tools.
