Reply #1 - Apr 6^th, 2018 at 12:32pm i was going to buy one the set for $299, but then at such a low price, I thought I'd give them away for Christmas presents "ground to a tolerance of .0002" per 12" of length" I have dust in my shop thicker than 2 ten thousandths of an inch.

At some point, you would think that these companies would wake up to the fact that we are working with WOOD. From the time that a woodworker could ever get a piece of wood jointed, planed and sawn to a tolerance of 2 ten thousandths of an inch to the time that the woodworker got two of those pieces glued up and ready for clamps, it has changed dimensions more than that. For that matter, the thickness of the glue is multiples of that, so unless the ww has found a way to spread glue to a precise constant thickness, he has wasted his 2 ten thousandths of an inch milling work.

these ads are aimed at the new crop of wood workers, those who learn by watching you-tube videos. they have not learned that wood is not a static entity at normal temperatures like steel nearly is. also missing is common sense.

as for accuracy, how accurate is your pencil or marking device?? just the way you hold and move it against a straight edge can mean the difference of 1/16 inch or more.

To me it does not matter the NAME of the product but does it work as I need. I have been wanting a good straight edge for my jointer and planner and table saw but at the cost of $150 is to strong for my blood. However, I do not begrudge anyone who has the money to buy them since they are working to get what they want and hopefully not a name.

I have learned far more from YouTube than any other source. I live in an area that has no clubs or adult ed classes. If you have the where with all to filter good safe practices from obviouse unsafe ones, YouTube can be a godsend to those who need resources.

we've got a gossip ever' 20 feet, our public librarys' newest book has been in there since 1972. Lips Sealed

As far ww clubs, the closest one is 150 miles away. Sad

I have read several books over the years about ww, scroll sawing, finishing, etc. But I got them from other sources. I don't use utube for anything. I'm self taught. I read it, then put it to work. I'm yet to perfect the lathe, but in time, I reckon I will. My scroll saws keep me to busy to spend much time on the lathe.
We've got a few carpenters in town, a semi load of wood butchers, & a couple of us that do custom wood working. Our Ag community consists of about 1800 folks. Huh

I figger if a feller needs a $200 straight edge to use, it's his money. And obviously has nothing else to do but collect shiny tools to make his shop more "showy." not to get it dusty. Wink

Not practical,
Not necessary,
Not possible to achieve in woodworking.

2 ten thousandths of an inch is space craft tolerances.
Wood can move more than that if you breath on it, seriously.

A straight edge with those tolerances is is a great tool, though it provides no real benefit in a woodworking shop.
It's actually not too expensive for the tolerances it claims but for less money you can get one with graduation on it that can also be used as a layout rule.
