steady rest

After a fair amount of review, I built a steady rest and am not happy with it.  Here is what I built:

It is not stiff enough.  I am thinking I will add another 3/4" layer of plywood and do more to make it stiff at the base. I may also add a second T-bolt location.  I think the T-track is stiff enough and that my movement is due to the stiffness between the upright and the base.

If I am remaking the plywood parts, I am thinking I might rather go to three wheels.

What are others thoughts?

This looks to be considerably stiffer than the one I built.

Before i made a second one I would try angle iron on the top and sides to see if that helps.... I made this one with great results

Originally I built a steady rest out of glued up plywood and found it to be not so steady as it was not rigid enough. Additionally it was very noisy. Saw the Jeff Nicol steel flange steady that Steve Bistriz references above. It’s ridgid and quiet! If you know how to weld or know someone who does, strongly recommend this. For my Jet 1642 the cost was about $70.

One thing to note is that for more stability, use as large a base as possible. Both in width and length. To maximize the use of a steady rest, the ID of the wheels in retracted position should be as close to the swing of the lathe as possible.

FWIW, I made one years ago for my 14" Delta.  It had three wheels.  I didn't route a groove for the T track so the wheels are surfaced mounted.  I would think that may increase the stability somewhat.  It worked fine the few times I needed it.  I don't do much in the way of hollow forms but did use it a few times.  Good luck Jenny.  I would like to see your final version.  I will probably have to re-do mine for the 16" Jet.

Jenny, I too have made the Jeff Nicol stead for my JEt 1642.  It works great and is very ridged.  I have six slots for the rollers but only really ever use three.  As you face the head stock from the tail stock, I place my rollers at the 2, 4 and 9 clock settings.  This gives you the opportunity to easily use a laser support while you are turning.  I also did not spend the time, or energy to paint it.  Good luck and HTH.
