When getting ready to purchase some new tool or gadget for your work, what goes into your purchase choice.
Do you read reviews from magazines forums or blogs, Do you talk to others at club meetings? Do you go with your gut? This is the type of thing we're asking.
QOTW
What type or amount of research goes into the purchase of a new tool?

When looking at a new tool (wood Turning), I read what is said here first. Then consider cost, how much I will use it, (ROI), and can I justify buying it. If a one time purchase with large amount of usage, then justification is easier.  Also, I judge the need vs want. Need is: can I do the  job without it?  Want is: I'll only use it once, but can do without.

Want does not win very often.

When I would like a new tool, I try to see an actual application of that tool on a video.  You Tube has been a great help.

Lately, I research the tool to death and then decide that I don't really need to spend the money.    Sad

I ask questions on forums (including this one) and search websites including youtube for demos or reviews.  Hearing other experienced wood turners opinions is very valuable and I am grateful that so many share.

I consider price before that.  If it is something worth buying, I do my homework and then decide whether to pull the string or not.

I thought I was the only one that did it that way.  The good news is the AAW Symposium is about a month away.  I am headed to Portland to check out all the shiny new toys that I could not possibly live without.
