NOVA 1-1/4″ FLEXIBLE POINT DRIVE CENTER

Just curious if anyone has used this drive center for bowls. I use my spur centere drive often, this would keep me from removing my chuck so often.

This looks like a Stebcenter or knockoff drive center made to be gripped by the jaws in a chuck.  Whether on a morse taper or in a four jaw chuck, this type of center is designed to spin free in the event of a major catch, and may be inclined to spin free under heavy roughing out of a bowl blank.

Thanks for the information. I guess I'll just keep using the mt spur drive that came with lathe.

That is my favorite type of drive center. Use one often.

I may be wrong ... I often am. I thought they were made to provide a drive with high tenacity in dry wood with minor penetration and not to slip.  That said I do not use mine with most bowls, especially green wood.  They will slip easily because the wood is so soft and even act as a drill.
In looking at your pic I notice a major difference from mine so maybe there are two styles?
In your pic the "teeth" are V and appears a little flat on the end which would be easier to slip.
Mine is like your spur drive with the "teeth" at a l/ shape.  The flat seats against the wood and the point is very sharp to bite in.  Like a 18 spur drive instead of a 4 spur.

I may be wrong, but I think the one with V-shaped teeth is a Sorby steb center. The other is a PSI knockoff.

The one In the original post is made by nova or at least sold by them to fir their chucks.  Chris, do you use one like this for bowls. Nova also has a steb center that will fit in their chucks. Just trying to figure out which would be best for starting bowls.  Thanks again for all the info.

These always wind up spinning out on me for anything but the smallest of pieces, particularly for things that aren't rounded yet.

Of course, it could just be that I'm a ham-fisted gorilla with a chisel, but who knows.  Wink
