Show us your work

Lets try something different.

We would like to see your work/s in progress. Seeing others methods and progressions throughout a project can be extremely helpful to other artists or craftsmen. Many people have a difficult time visualizing things where a single picture can clear things up in an instant.
So, lets see what your working on. It can be anything from prepping your work, construction in progress, cutting pieces for assembly, mounting, turning, finishing, etc.
Please only works not yet completed (finished work belongs in the gallery)

QOTW
What are you working on? Show us in pictures please

Here's my latest. The outside is done and this afternoon, i'll flip it and work the inside.
It is about 11" dia. and about 5" thick.

That massive gouge on the right is deep enough that it will be an open area once the inside is done. Right now, I can put my fingers into it. It had been filled with punk bark.

The smaller one on  the left is almost completely hard bark with the slim gap that I might clean up a bit as it is fairly sharp right now.

This is another piece of that Spalted Birch root burl. I still have a lot more left to play with!! Smiley Smiley

I'm calling this 10 inch peppermill un-finished since I haven't made a top for it yet. It showed me how much harder it is to do a 6 strand celtic knot on a round blank than 4 strands on a square blank. Much harder to get things to line up when clamping even though I made a U shaped channel to lay them in tight for glueing and clamping. Bad shadow photography and needs more coats of sanding and finish.

I don't know how much this pic will tell anyone about the finished piece - not much, I expect. I did a slide show with several pics along the way, but the file size is much too big.

This is an open segment piece made up of 528 segments, plus the base and top ring. I did it using 2 x 4 fir simply to see if I could do it without blowing it up. It worked, so I've done two more in cherry.

I had to make a bed extension for my Vega bowl lathe, as the piece is much longer than the short bed lathe will accommodate.

Ralph, that's definitely going to be Art, I don't see much soup staying in that bowl.
Robert, However difficult it was, it looks like you did a great job with your alignment of the rings.
Grant, this is a great photo of process or method, what size is the gap, 4 degrees?
Thanks guys

I don't think it's as talented as the previous posts but when Ed posted his question I was using the Mini Lathe with 1/4" Collet Chuck set up for some Wheels [ my own design] made from Hard Rock Maple of which are 1 1/2" dia. and 1 5/8" dia. Enjoy my work of the Jet Ski on Trailer and 4-Wheeler--

Buck, don't ever sell yourself short. The fact that you don't cop out and purchase ready made wheels is already more than many do. Making wheels of your own design is just  one thing that sets your pieces apart from the rest.
Grant, full disclosure, I'm not really a fan of open segmented pieces. It's probably due to the fact that I've seen so many poorly executed ones.
That being said, I like the look and shape of yours, Looking forward to seeing the completed piece in the gallery.
Thanks again guys
These type of photo driven thread usually help to inspire others to try something new or at least put the idea in their heads.

A work in progress and my first attempt at a natural edge bowl. 7 inch diameter around 3 1/2 high. Wood is unknown, from a tree my Grandson cut down a year ago. Possibly Osage Orange??. Very heavy and full of small cracks. Screwed it to a faceplate and cut the outside and recessed bottom. Started inside but cuts very hard and scary for me. Stopped because I need something better in a toolrest to get in farther, maybe one of those curved ones? I soaked the bark edge with WOP to try and hold it together. Seems solid now.

Gosh, I wouldn’t know where to start with something like that Grant.  Thumbs Up You must be very patient. I saw some bowls recently made in a similar way using two contrasting woods. The individual pieces were quite small, there must have been many hundreds of pieces. What glue do you use, I can’t see any excess!
