OSMO wood finishes
Jul 22nd, 2018 at 11:59am

Has anyone tried the OSMO(brand name) wood finishes on woodturnings- specifically utility type bowls?  Supposedly oil and hard wax mixture.  Stuff is not cheap!

Thanx

Product literature can be interesting.
Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register says their products "keep wood healthy" - wood is dead.
On exterior surfaces, it lets the rain evaporate naturally - what would be unnatural evaporation?
"The wood is allowed to breathe which means it is naturally protected" - what in the world does this mean?
They keep the wood elastic, prevent its becoming brittle?

The finish is a combination of sunflower, thistle, and soyabean oils and carnauba and candelillo waxes.

What is your definition of a "utility bowl?"  If it is a food bowl that will be washed often with a mild dish soap, the wax coating will wear off, leaving an oil finish.

Ditto on what is a utility bowl. If you are inclined towards an oil/wax finish why not mineral oil/beeswax. Inexpensive and with a little effort you can make enough to last many reapplications. The net is full of instructions. As said above the wax will wash off but is easy to restore. IMHO

Marketing  cow pucky

1. I agree
2. I agree
3. Letting cut wood breathe is what makes it rot, (oxygen is the enemy)
4. Coat it with wax and oil and if will "feel" fine. Not all woods contain elastic properties. If your talking about seasonal expansion and contraction, properly sealed wood has less movement than raw wood and is considered more stable.

If you don't seal the pores wood can rot from the inside out
If you don't seal/coat the surface, wood can rot from the outside in
your choice

The one finish that they have that might be what you're looking for is Top Oil

Unfortunately, many products that contain "natural" compounds are not required to list them so you really don't have any idea of what's in them. You are left to the marketing terms and claims used in the advertising.
I personally haven't used them, I would email them and inquire about a sample (many places do this)
