What is a “standard” thread anyway?

What I meant by that is a popular thread size with many accessories available.
There are far more accessories made in the sizes 1"x 8 and 1 1/4" x 8 than most other sizes here in the U.S. On your side of the pond it may be  the 33 x 3.5.

The point I was trying to get across, was is to modify the machine once, not each chuck, faceplate, etc.  Whether that modification is in the form of a screw-on style or morse taper adapter wasn't relevant.

I’ve done a web search on the Dominion A.L.Y. 1 Vic but the images are not very clear. The spindle nose from what I can see though looks quite long for a wood lathe and doesn’t seem to have much of a registration at the back of the thread? Do you have a picture of the spindle thread?

Thanks for all the helpful comments guys.

Wil i've attached a photo as requested. The thread is, I'm pretty sure, a 2" Whitworth (or BSW) thread with 4.5 TPI. The registration is close to the headstock body as you can see.

I must admit I’ve never seen a threaded lathe spindle that long before. I don’t think you’d be able to mount a Versachuck directly on that, it’s too long. You’re back to either putting a Morse taper adapter in the spindle with a draw bar or having a custom adapter made. The former is the cheapest option though. A blank end MT3 arbor is less than a tenner but you’d need to get it thread cut for the chuck of your choice. Let us know how you get on as it may help someone else.  Smiley

Old Delta 12" 46-701 in great condition. Had it about 20+ years and turned 1 part.

If that spindle shaft were removable you could have a shop cut it down to a shorter 1 1/4 - 8 thread with better registration as well. See if its possible?
