air filters

Harbour Freight has a large air filter good to 5 microns.  With their typical of 20% off...its $160.   Is it worth it, can it be modified to work down to 1 micron.  How much filtering is enough....I have COPD.

I have that dust collector and have modified the filter as well as added a shop-made cyclone to save changing the dust bag very often (which is an unmitigated pain). I don't know how much I trust the filtering aspect of it - I still wear a mask while sanding. I bought it because it has the power to (edited out) hoover the big shavings up off of the floor, and it does a great job at that.

Think there was an informative thread on this very topic a week or 2 ago.

Because you suffer from COPD, you should only look at HEPA rated type air filtration equipment.  Personally, I opted for a 3M Versaflo personal respirator system that has HEPA filtration.  It's a bit on the pricey side at retail, but I was able to score one on Ebay in almost unused condition for $800.  I really couldn't afford the cost of it, but I watched my Mom suffer terribly from COPD and wanted to protect my lungs as much as possible.
