Ordered some roller blade replacement wheels and installed them on a plywood steady rest ring yesterday. With a 4' ash spindle on the lathe the steady rest did not seem to allow any bouncing back and forth. This spindle was the inspiration for a steady rest, as it would wobble too much to get a smooth surface, it's about 1 1/2" diameter. Hope to try it out with a skew chisel tomorrow or tuesday.

Those wheels may work well, but the description doesn't say how hard the wheels are. And I am always wary of how long far east products will stand up to use. I purchased mine from InLineSkates.com and I think a set of eight with bearings was about $32 + tax.

When I tried the steady rest on the problem spindle, I found that the spindle tried to slip between wheels until I really snugged the wheels against the spindle. This made me wonder if a 4 arm would be better. When I drew a 3 arm and 4 arm in CAD with the same size wheels, I found out that 3 wheels leaves a smaller circle between them than 4 wheels.

I've never understood how only two wheels help, but Oneway is a very reputable company.

I suppose they just dampen the vibrations caused by tool pressure if placed opposite the tool. Three or four wheels are needed to fully support a workpiece but as said I don’t need this at present and in fact a third wheel may get in the way of the tool. Wink

Wil, I ordered and received the rollers you provided a link for. This was in the post in the beginning of this thread.
I cannot get the rollers to turn freely. Upon inspection of the roller/bearing the inner race of the bearing is shorter than the outer race of the bearing. When I tighten up on the bolt the outer race is being contacted before the inner race and the wheel will not move. In my opinion these roller/ bearing are faulty, actually all 3 are the same way. How can you possibly have the bearing operate normally, roll free, if the outer race is being squeezed first.
In my opinion these roller/bearings are designed wrong and will never work.
