Hi all,

Here are some photos from my latest project. It's a simply bowl, but was kind of interesting so I thought I would share. I picked up this piece of wood from the Badger Woodturners club meeting about 6 months ago. The blank came with the attached letter stating where the tree had been felled.

It measures 2.5 inches tall and is about 9 inches across. The large crack through the center had to be filled with resin. In hindsight, I would have done this while the piece was still square. I ended up wasting some resin by having to form a mold around a circular object. The wood was rock hard. I had to sharpen my tools after every one or two passes. I guess the plus side to that is that it polished up well.

The finish is U-Beaut EEE-Ultra Shine then  Shellawax Cream.

C&C welcome.

Cheers,
Alistair

Would it have been easier to take it off the lathe, fill, then put back on the lathe?

Very nice story and pictorial. The wood is beautiful and your bowl is very nice looking. Good job.

Would it have been? I'm not sure. The crack was right on the side of the blank, so I had to have that side of the wood facing up while the resin cured.

I'm certainly not an expert with resin, as I've only used it a handful of times. Though I don't see how having the piece off the lathe would have helped. What am I missing?

Off the lathe can be supported under one edge so the the crack is facing straight up and the crack perfectly horizontal.  A larger/deeper crack I'll fill in stages with 5 min epoxy.

I often bring pieces I turn into work to show my coworkers. A few weeks ago my boss asked if he could pay me to make a bowl for an anniversary gift for his wife. The date is their wedding day.

Ah, makes sense now.  Thoughts I was in a time warp!
