need a piece of "flowering dogwood"
Oct 9th, 2018 at 5:06am

Good morning, I need a favor from somebody.

I have been asked to turn a very simple piece  for a special person. I apologize for making this sound like a mystery but circumstances require me to do so.

I would like a "flowering dogwood blank" measuring 4"X 4"X8" tall. These would have to be the minimum measurements, if you have something larger, it would be fine. This blank has to be just about ready to be turned (within 30 days) and free from defects.
The "flowering dogwood" is Virginia's state tree.

If anybody can help me, please post what you have and we'll make arrangements to arrange costs, shipping, etc.

Thank you,
Dick

Sorry for the confusion. I made a mistake on my earlier post.

The piece of wood that I'm looking for is "flowering dogwood", and not boxwood that I mentioned on my first post...which I have edited.

Thank you
Dick

Dick, it seems this is a bit difficult to find.
I did find a site that carries it but they are currently out of stock.
I would contact your favorite wood vendor and ask.

Thanks Ed,
Your right, it is hard to find.  The research that I've done just comes out with small blanks, for pens and such.

I'll keep looking.
Thanks for taking the time.

8 inch diameter dog wood is fairly rare. Contact arborists, best source, some times logging companies if you know of any can find one that size. I have seen Pacific dogwood up to 16 inch diameter, but those are giants, or even monsters...

Dick,
I probably have some but we are dead in the eye of the hurricane(south Ga) so it may take a couple of day for me to check. What you need is 8" long not 8" in diameter as Reed noted, is that correct?

I am going to PM you my cell number so if you haven't heard from me by Friday give me a call. We're getting the eye of Michael over us tonight so I'm not sure what the outside of my place will look like in the morning.

Dave, that is correct. I'm looking for 8 inches "long".

These measurements would the "minimum" measurements required to complete my project...4"X4"X8" long. If it is in log form it would have to be minimum 4" in diameter and 8" long.
I would not have a problem with anything wider or longer, especially longer.

Thank you very much for helping me out with this project.
Good luck and stay safe with this hurricane.
Dick
