Another Newbie from Texas

I have turned pens in the past, but wanted to get into something bigger.  This weekend I got some sapele blanks and this is the results, a 9 inch platter and a couple of 4x3 inch candle holders.  Although not near the quality of the folks on this board, I was pretty please with how they came out.  I am currently using carbide tools, but I am looking forward to Santa bringing some conventional tools and a sharpening system.  So the next hurdle with be learning to sharpen and use those, but hope I will be able to get a better surface straight off the tools.  I also need to refine my finishing technique, but that is all part of the learning curve.  Please feel free to comment any ideas.  Thanks.

Welcome from the Cuero area!
Whereabouts are you in the great state?

Everyday liberating nice things from ordinary chunks of wood---and I like gnarly wood, the outcome is nearly always better than the start.

I live in Double Oak, just north of Dallas.  Spent lots of time out around San Angelo while I was going to school.  Funny, I was surrounded by all that mesquite and did not know what I had access to.
