I thought I would post a project since I haven't done so in a while.
I don't need people thinking I just give my opinion about everything and can't actually turn. All hat and no cattle sort of thing  Grin
Also I realized I hadn't shown the final product of the Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Platter is 19" x 2", Maple (2 species), Walnut (2 species) and Cherry.

Absolutely incredible! And I thought segmented turning was difficult. When I watched your original video on the Compass Rose build I decided it was way to much for me to attempt.

Again, impressive amazing skill. Thanks for showing it.

Very nice use of the segmented technique.  I must admit that most segmented turnings are just not for me, but this one I like.

Well Done!  Thumbs Up

So.. how did you do those maple inserts around the edge?

They weren't in the original youtube video.

Absolutely beautiful!! Smiley Smiley

SWMBO likes the back as much (possibly more) than the front.
So here's the back

Old Delta 12" 46-701 in great condition. Had it about 20+ years and turned 1 part.

I enjoy your opinions Ed, but your work is really fantastic. How thick was the layer that forms the double ring base (I Assume) on the back side and is that the same layer that shows along the edge?? Maybe this is all top secret? I love making segmented stuff so much more that a solid turned bowl.

For Segmenters
I don't know if any of you noticed  Undecided, if you did you didn't mention it.

Adding a little to the build slideshow.
I wanted to point out that the rim is constructed using "grain following" technique. This makes it look as if it's a continuous piece running around the perimeter, which serves several purposes.
Along with color matching, IMO it anchors the rim more than using individual segments. Random or non following segments would all have a different color, tint, and chatoyance. With the number of segments used (60 walnut, 60 maple)  it would either give the rim more of a textured look or make the rim look too busy. which would not be appropriate for this piece.

IMO, Using Grain Following, though more time consuming and sometimes wasteful, it can have an effect on a piece that might not be noticed but is still seen in a way.
Thank you all again for your comments, I do appreciate them  Smiley

Well, it's not top-secret but don't tell anyone.
The piece was "complete" except for the twin rings that act as the foot. The base of the platter was trued up and then I added the ring which was about 5/16" when I started, it's about 1/4" now. Since the based was true and the ring sanded parallel, there was little waste to be turned away.
The foot is approximately the same height as the top maple ring in the transition area (the three rings that separate the base and rim)

I do have some construction photos I can post. but only if people are interested
