I thought I would post a project since I haven't done so in a while.
I don't need people thinking I just give my opinion about everything and can't actually turn. All hat and no cattle sort of thing Grin

How thick was the layer that forms the double ring base (I Assume) on the back side and is that the same layer that shows along the edge?? Maybe this is all top secret? I love making segmented stuff so much more that a solid turned bowl.

I don't know if any of you noticed Undecided

, if you did you didn't mention it.

Adding a little to the build slideshow.
I wanted to point out that the rim is constructed using "grain following" technique. This makes it look as if it's a continuous piece running around the perimeter, which serves several purposes.
Along with color matching, IMO it anchors the rim more than using individual segments. Random or non following segments would all have a different color, tint, and chatoyance. With the number of segments used (60 walnut, 60 maple) it would either give the rim more of a textured look or make the rim look too busy. which would not be appropriate for this piece.

IMO, Using Grain Following, though more time consuming and sometimes wasteful, it can have an effect on a piece that might not be noticed but is still seen in a way.

Well, it's not top-secret but don't tell anyone.
The piece was "complete" except for the twin rings that act as the foot. The base of the platter was trued up and then I added the ring which was about 5/16" when I started, it's about 1/4" now. Since the based was true and the ring sanded parallel, there was little waste to be turned away.
The foot is approximately the same height as the top maple ring in the transition area (the three rings that separate the base and rim)

I do have some construction photos I can post. but only if people are interested
