Help with off-center turning
Jul 11th, 2019 at 10:14am

Hello friends, I need your experience to be able to make a lure in which the spine is different from the belly. I know that is achieved by turning decentralized, I attach some images of what I want to do, maybe someone can help me.
Thank you

Here is a video that shows the basic method of turning oval shapes by repositioning the blank.
Hope this helps

It's not a difficult method to understand, sometimes just seeing it being performed is enough.

Yes, Ed, but can it be done without using the "gold robert sorbey roughing gouge"?   Grin

Well I wouldn't want to take that chance  Grin
I'm not sure how the gold gouge works but it has to be better, it's gold.

It's actually just a TN coated gouge.

"High performance roughing gouge with the cutting edge enhanced by a Titanium Nitride coating."

My roughing gouge has a brown/black iron oxide coating to provide a non-slip grip. Undecided

Here is another video with a different feel to it.
Everyone learns things differently so I thought I would provide another source.

As you can see in the video, this is a method I think every turner should know and use. While turning things perfectly round is great, at times we need ovals and other non-round shapes for aesthetics and utility. Many tool handles benefit from an oval or non-round handle so the they can be indexed by the users hand. This provides more control and comfort to the user.
Even if you do the final shaping by hand, roughing out the initial shape and thickness on the lathe can be a great time saver.

Here is a mallet I made using this technique for the initial handle shaping. The final shaping was done by a variety of hand tools.

Back to the topic of fishing lures.
One thing I forgot to mention when using this method, you can do one of two things.
One, move the drive end and tail end uniformly to achieve an oval along the entire length of your blank.
OR
Move only the drive end and leave the tail centered.
This will oval the drive end while not affecting the tail end. This has the effect of blending the oval section to the round section, which may be desired when making different lure profiles for movement through the water.
Hope this helps

Thank you very much everyone for their comments, are very helpful, the last option that Ed says is the one that I will try, combine the oval with the cylindrical to not affect the tail of the lure and if the attack profile of the lure
