New Bowl

This is a Padauk & Maple bowl. The ellipse are the same size. To get that to happen, I mounted the feature ring to a face plate with the center of the feature ring and the center of the face plate to be concentric with each other. I turned a wood dowel, with a 1/4" diameter hole in the middle of the dowel. The wood dowel is sized to fit the miner diameter of the face plate. The reason for this tool was to be able to rotate the ring on the table saw so that I could saw the flats at the same distance out from the center of the face plate.
In the wood dowel I put a 1/4" dowel in, and indexed off a slide, so that I could saw the flats.
After the 8 flats were sawed, I glued the Padauk veneer, maple veneer, padauk veneer and maple veneer. All the veneer pieces were 1/16" thick.
At this point it's a matter of gluing the other rings onto the bowl and turning.
I hope this makes sense.

The slightest bit off center would otherwise bee seen as different sized ellipses. I use a slightly different method but the results are the same. Nice Job

Ray, got lost at the "miner" diameter of the face place. I understand the "minor"and the major diameter of an ellipse. Is the face plate elliptical? You "sized the dowel to fit the miner diameter of the face plate" (??) I don't understand what that means. Then this "tool" is used to create 8 equidistant flats? Wouldn't a drum sander be more accurate before the "flats" are cut? Are the ellipses veneer? If they are, how did you inlay it? How was the padauk ellipse even cut? Maybe if I were a more experienced turner your explanation would make perfect sense. Your new bowl would get a perfect 10 if I were judging!

Mount ring
use some type of indexing to cut flats
apply layers
turn to reveal ellipse shape
The outer profile determines the shape of the ellipse
The flattening of the faces on a mounted, trued surface/s ensures that all faces will be equal in size and shape.

Making laminated segments before assembly and/or mounting, can certainly be done but will more often than not introduce a small amount of error in alignment.
Any, small amount of error is magnified with this style of turning. (profile changes pattern)
