What wood do you want?

Now that many of you have mentioned what woods you like and have, what woods do you want to try?

Personally I can't think of any particular wood at the moment but maybe after some responses something might click.

I always want a big cherry burl.  I also want some plum, preferably a stump.

I've had a bit of Madrone burl, would love some more of it both burl and log form.  Anything from the West coast, big leaf maple, tiger maple etc.

Black cherry, which we don't have out here on the west coast. Such a beautiful wood. I love the 'olive' ash, which is the darker heart wood in the big old trees. One of those wonderful colors that you can't keep on the shelf. Glenn Lucas seems to get a lot of it... Mesquite would be another one since it doesn't grow out here either...

Does this forum ever get involved with a wood swap?
Seems like there are people out there with way too much wood and other people that would really enjoy having some of the uncommon species not available in their part of the country.

We've done them in the past, we just need enough interest.
There are many ways to do it, just some examples
East coast, West coast swap.
Direct member to member swap.
Round robin blind swap.

I think one problem with that is the cost of shipping a block of wood across the country.

Amazing enough tho..

I just had a LARGE walnut slab shipped fom central Pa to Maine and it cost $52.00!! ...and another slab from central Ca. and it was only about $10 more!

Not sure how these companies calculate the shipping cost.
I mean.. both slabs weighed almost 100 lbs. each.

Woods I've never worked but would like to try include Snakewood, Lace She-Oak, Olivewood, Tasmanian Blackwood, and Katalox.  Hopefully I'll be able to afford and purchase a bowl saver before I obtaining any of these exotics.  Domestically, I've treated myself to most everything that I've wanted to turn at some time or another.  Those that I'll continue to splurge on are Mesquite and Hawaiin Koa.

Many of these exotics won't be found in large sizes at any price.
You can get small (I think they're called micro) hollowing knives for smaller blanks. With the price of tropical and exotics, it can be worth coring out something as small as 6" or even less.
IME
Snake wood, hard and very prone to cracking, very brittle IMO
Olive, prone to cracking, needs to be left thick
Tas Blackwood, very nice
Katalox, hard but manageable, I like it

Never tried the Sheoak

How does one reduce the possibility of relocating a new fungus or insect with a swap.  Walnut canker first appeared I believe in California, then it jumps to Pennsylvania?  Is a swap worth the risk of spreading pestilence?

Only if you break the law
There are always certain species that should not cross state lines for the very reason you mentioned.
I wouldn't want anyone to send me wood that shouldn't be here, not worth the risk.
You need to go to your own states web site and look up any restrictions there may be, it does change from time to time.

Well, I don't think a "wood swap" is going to happen. I would be interested but from what I see here, there are a few comments but none of them expressed interest.

If it were ever to happen, a small or medium flat rate box would be the way to go. As far as bugs, following legal guide lines and using common sense would apply. Not shipping anything with bark or visible entry holes as an example.
Oh well, guess I'll go cut down a scrub oak so I'll something to play with.

Please don't mistake my humor for sarcasm...just kidding around.

Dick
