Purpleheart/Moisture Staining?
Dec 18th, 2019 at 4:13am

I make flutes. This particular one was a Native American Style flute.I usually when I get to a certain point play the flute before I finish it.This purpleheart one got some moisture on it at a hard to sand place and it got dark places on it.I sanded some out but I may have to live with the rest of it. It is under the "block" or "bird if you might know what I am talking about. Any ideas on what to do? I know in the future I need to put finish on these places but I am in experimental mode right now and didnt know this.(I have used purple heart before but never had this problem on the other type flutes because they dried out quicker...Thanks in advance!!

I don't know what type of detail sanders you have or how tight it is under the block.
Not really sure how I can help

Would it be OK to wet down the whole area to cover the stain?
I do not work with "exotics" so this is a guess on my part.

Ed, I don't have a detail sander at all..If you or someone else has a good recommendation please let me know. I definitely need one. I worked on this piece a little today using pliers, a small clamp and whatever I could find to hold a small piece of sandpaper...The piece I am sanding is 3/4" wide and 3 1/2" and about 1/8" deep. So I would like something that is small.I would want to invest in a good one this time.It would help with my hands and arthritis. (I have not had luck with tools at our big box store so I won't go there)

Glenn, when I finish up with these exotics I will not order anymore. I will work with eastern red cedar...a softer wood and not a rain forest wood!.

Are you meaning "cover the whole area with a finish?" I sanded a lot it away today and it should be close to acceptable....a little more sanding should do it I hope
but it isnt good on my hands....Got an idea on a detail sander let me know please.!

Purple heart changes color with heat and/or sunlight... try hitting the flute with a heat gun to see if things blend out...

Good idea Glenn... I dont have a heat gun so Ill just do a little more sanding and let it be .Its almost good..These places were dark, almost paint like but not really paint.Ive worked with p.h. before but never seen this.It had to be how the moisture did when I played it.It covered the area....Works goood on my other flutes but certainly won't use it on these anymore....I plan on working with more woods like eastern red cedar anyhow.  Thanks!

Mike, my initial thought was Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
I've had a set of these for years and they can help to get into corners and other tight spaces. Also I know that micro-mesh makes sanding sticks that could work.

Ed,those sanding sticks look useful I may give them a try... (That block is removable but still the place is a pain to sand) I think I like the ones in your link better and they would last me a long time but would work good!

Ron they are basically dark almost painted over places.I have sanded most of them out.I am pretty sure it came from moisture when I was playing the flute ,tuning it.
