Reeves drive on Central machinery lathe from Harbor Freight (Read 565 times)

Posts: 1 Central machinery 12 x 36 from Harbor Freight	Reeves drive on Central machinery lathe from Harbor Freight Jan 5^th, 2020 at 11:04am Having trouble with my Reeves drive on my Central Machinery 12X36 lathe from Harbour freight. Have replaced the pulleys and the belt but for some reason the mechanism to speed up the pulley is working only 50%. Any suggestions?

If you could be more precise, working 50% doesn't really tell use much in the way it's operating.
Is it not achieving full speed?
Is it not reaching the slowest speed?
Is the proper belt (OEM or equivalent) installed?
Did you replace the tension spring?
etc...
More often than not with a reeves drive, there is something on the shaft preventing the pulleys from expanding and contracting smoothly. Debris from the belt or a groove/burr from the pulleys would be my first place to look. If the pulleys have a full, smooth range of motion, then you need to look further.

Is it possible it needs lubrication? If so I would suggest graphite as the lube

Be sure to clean the main shaft on the lathe head. Mine froze and had to replace the drive pulleys. Yours sounds like there is a loose mechanical joint in the linkage between the lever and pulley. a word to the wise on the Reeves Drive Central machinery lathe - do not hit it with a rubber mallet - the cast metal pulleys will crack very easily - Angry

mine quit opening all the way due dust and was coaxed back to working fully with some lubrication so that the two interacting pulleys could work back and forth - you have to be very carefull not to over lubricate - and once again do not tap with a rubber mallet for what ever reason - I had a two month haitus after having my shoulder and arm repaired and it froze up
