Doohickey for jaw sizing

I'm not sure that this is a jig, so it's a doohickey for marking the tenon/recess on turning bottoms.  I saw this on a video (don't remember who) so I can't claim credit for being the developer.

It's pretty simple, just lay it against the bottom and mark the edge.  I've marked the center so it's easy to make sure it's aligned and I don't have a couple of circles looking for a centered one.  One for each size of chuck jaws.

I'm guessing that "gauge" is a better description than "doohickey" but they both work for me.    I've seen Mike Peace use a similar doohickey in his videos, so perhaps that's where you got the idea.

Lots of ways to do it. I use a recess on my bowls. I have 2 dedicated dividers/compass tools with the adjustable knob super glued into place so they don't vibrate open, which takes about one or two bowls. I saw in a Glenn Lucas video where he had some thing attached to his tailstock that was a tenon sizer....

Honestly, I just do it by eye. After a a while, it's just second nature.

Further research has some up with other possible names for it:
  • gizmo
  • whatchamacallit
  • widget
  • thingamabob
  • thingy
  • doojigger
  • doodad
  • frammis
  • gadget
  • gizmo
  • whatsit
  • whatchamahoozie
Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list.

In my book, if you made it, you get to name it.

I suggest modifying the template with two sizes each for the tenon and recess, one for the minimum and one for the maximum allowed by the jaws

Minimum and maximum are nice to have for reference, and I have them written on the boxes holding the jaws.  Whenever possible though, I use as close to the minimums as I can as I've read so many times the minimums have the greatest holding power.  I transfer the dimensions with a pair of dividers.

I like to turn green wood with a tenon about midway between min and max.  Then I have enough margin to re-true the tenon after it dries and turns oval.  Admittedly, you can usually eyeball that as an offset from the minimum.

I made a doohickey thing I saw Mike Peace using. Of course I did it backwards and after crafting a fine piece of wood into a gauge; I have to try it again.

I made these gizmos for checking the tenons.  The ears are long enough to slide over the tenon while on the lathe.  I set the width to a little wider than the fully closed jaws.  That way when the gismo slides over the tenon, it still has enough left to true up after the bowl dries and warps.
