Latest turning or turning related project.

I think the title pretty much says it all.
I haven't been doing too much turning lately, a tool handle here and there is about it. I've been trying to clean the shop and add some ventilation.
What have you all been up to?

I've turned some pens, working on a bowl. But mostly doing flat stock work: cabinets for kitchen.

I've been putting finish on everything I turned over the winter.  If art shows return next summer I won't have to turn anything this next year!  I guess now it's time to work on taking it to the next level since I'm not under deadlines.

Somethings can be a blessing in disguise.
It's not always easy or possible to do do a "re-set" in the course of normal events.
I think a lot of people who can, are doing the same thing.

Other than the ball finial for the cedar birdhouse I have not turned anything on the lathe in weeks.

Right now my shop is in disarray while I am doing a little rearranging. Getting rid of one bench and putting two of the benchtop  machines it held on individual small cabinets with drawers and wheels. Doing this so the 3520b can go in the middle of the shop instead of against the table saw and having to move it to use the saw. The 3520b is on a homemade lift lock and roll setup.

Thats what i am doing.  I have a storage shelf unit packed with rough turned hollow forms.  Every one that is not spalted or a burl is going to get carved, pierced or burned.

A neighbor cut several maple trees down last October, including a large tree, ornamental species of some kind and a silver maple, which were diseased (his loss) but meant lots of spalted wood (my gain). This wood cracks very quickly, but if roughed out immediately, is more stable. So I did nothing but roughs for about a month, which were dry enouth for the second turn starting in May. This is a tall piece, about 14 inches, with a walnut accent. To keep a weight distribution for the piece, I made the wall of the walnut ring fairly thick. It was a good excerise in deep CF turning, about my limit.

I've just completed an entirely new shop arrangement.  I finally feel like I've maximized every inch of floor space and yet the garage has more 'space' than ever.  I also recently broke down and purchase the Teknatool outrigger attachment for my DVR.  Was it absolutely necessary?  No...is it easier, safer, and more enjoyable to be able to drop the handle to any position I prefer?  Absolutely.  I also reorganized my chuck and tool area behind the lathe.  This got stuff out of my tool box and onto the wall where they're ready at hand and yet up and out of the way.  And something a long long time coming.  I 'turned' a head stand for my Trend helmet.  A must?  Probably not but it did get one more item up and off the work bench which is finally completely clear of everything for the first time in several years.  As I said...none of the above was absolutely necessary but even the wife commented on how much nicer and 'put together' the shop looks now.

After you get all that done,

Nice looking piece. Pretty wood also.

One of the benefits (or curses) of being clinically OCD is my wife and boys will tell you that I know exactly where every tool, jig, widget, gadget, and hardware fastener is in my shop.

I can tell you it's in the shop, where depends on the day  Grin

Seriously, I have moved a few things around recently and by simple force of habit I go to reach for.. and catch myself, it's not there anymore, now it's over here.

I am trying to separate two pieces of paper,

I'm wearing my mask,

I instinctively swipe my thumb on my tongue,

which means I'm swiping my thumb on the mask...

and.. my tongue is actually sticking out!!

Talk about force of habit!!!

On the plus side,  it seems to be entertaining to my customers. Grin
