When I turn y pens they are thicker on one side than the other. What could cause this?

If you are saying the wood is oval shaped one possible cause is your mandrel is flexing. Have you checked to see if your headstock and tailstock are in proper alignment? If you are not sure how to check the alignment let us know and one of us will talk you through the process, really quite easy.

What material are you turning, at what speed, and what tool(s) are you using?  Is the blank out of round when the square cross section is brought round and when finish turned?

Most of the time, pens are "out of round" because of how they were turned.
Too much pressure applied when turning can flex the mandrel shaft and the result can be as you described with more wood on one side of the barrel than the other.

This is just an educated guess

Also, how much difference are you noticing from one side to the other?

The very first thing to determine is whether you are using a 60 degree live center in the tailstock or using the pointy live center that came with your lathe. The live centers that come with most lathes do not work with pen mandrels, and the most common symptom is out of round pens.

Are you using a pen mandrel? Are you turning between centres? Are you using bushings?
