Another way to lower lathe RPMs Dramatically...
Oct 12th, 2020 at 7:39am

Came across the gentleman below from South Africa I believe.  Not sure what motor he used, but he figured out a way to add a small ancillary motor to the hand wheel of his NOVA DVR.  Using the ancillary motor only he is able to have his lathe turn at an incredibly slow 4 RPMs.  He appears to use this speed for applying resin finishes and other like things but it may have other applications like super slow sanding, etc.  Not sure if it would have been permissible to post the YouTube link so I posted his YouTube channel name below.

Anyways...thought someone here may find it useful if just not interesting to see another man's solution.

Here's the correct link to the video: Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Although I've been to South Africa a number of times, I couldn't place his accent.   That's because, while he's living in Cape Town now, he's originally from Israel. I have heard of people using BBQ rotisserie motors for this type of ultra slow speed. Great for drying

I know there is some thing called a 'gear' motor. It is fairly strong and runs in the 5 or so rpm range. I used it for a lathe to wrap the fringe ends onto a version of what we called Twiddle Sticks or those Chinese devil sticks, the baton you twirl with 2 hand sticks. It did have forward and reverse on it. No clue as to where they are available. It was a long time ago...

I don't know about 5 rpm but their are dedicated websites for low rpm project motors.
Just an example

So many seem to bemoan that fact that their machines cannot rotate slow enough...I thought this one man's idea clever enough to warrant mentioning.  I certainly never would have thought of it.

I appreciate you bringing "Ahron Africanmeat" to our attention.  He has a lot of interesting Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.   What he does is pretty much beyond my ability, but the videos are fun to watch nonetheless.

Agreed...many are beyond mine as well.  But some give me 'courage' to try something new while others give me ideas that are well within my comfort zone.  You never know...

It's only beyond your ability until you do it.

Ralph, I started at the local Saturday Market in about 1983. I was selling custom footbags, known to most of the world as Hacky Sacks, which is a brand name. Kind of like Frisbee and flying disc. We ventured into juggle balls, and then into our version of 'Twiddle Sticks'. We used fiber resin sticks so they could be kicked as well as twirled. I got a woodshop as the result of a job injury by falling off a deck and blowing up a knee. One year, I sold a $600 cherry dresser, and got my first lathe. The turning took over every thing else... Had lots of fun along the way.
