I went with some Benjamin’s Best tools to start out.
I got three bowl gauges, 5/8, 1/2 and 3/8.
I also got a 1” Round nose scraper and a 3/4x18” parting tool.
I figured I can always upgrade as I get better.
I’m thinking about ordering a spindle gouge and a roughing gouge.

Hasn't been mentioned in this thread, but tool use can be at least as important as the quality of the tools, and sharpness of edge.  With the pandemic, it can be more difficult to find local turning groups that are meeting, or local mentors willing to help one on one.

Youtube videos can be problematic, as they are not reviewed to exclude those showing unsafe and poor technique.

There are quite a number of videos on this web site, and all have been previewed before inclusion.

There are also a number of good videos one can purchase,  My personal favorite (I look at them regularly, even after ten years) are the book/video combinations by Richard Raffan.

Hi everyone.
I’m just getting started and can use as much help as I can. I’m about to order a Jet 1221VS lathe, but not sure which chisel set to start with. I want something better then the Harbor Fright starter set, but I don’t want to start off with Carter and Son.
I would like to know what y’all would recommend.

Hey Lee ... It seems like you ask all the questions I need answered.. I did buy the cheapest HF chisels I could find like 17 bucks out the door...I don't expect much from them I figure I am going to screw up sharping them anyway, so cheap practice.. I also bought DMT D2K 2.5-inch Dia-Sharp Diamond Mini-Hone Kit of C, F, E ... from some youtube videos I seen this all your really need .. besides it was cheapest way to start out... I can always try a jig if need be. I already blew up my tool budget.. Just purchased a Laguna 14/12 bandsaw and an RBI scroll saw. no more new toys till after New years

I ordered some sendal gauges to go along with my bowl gauges.
I’ve made one flying object and three bowls so far. I’m learning and having a hell of a time. Smiley

Only once you know how to properly use a tool can you misuse it.  Grin

Those of use with a little more experience could make do with less than sharp and/or quality of tool. Knowing all the in's and out's of a tool is definitely more important that the name on the package. Once you're proficient enough, you'll naturally seek out the quality of tools that suit your needs.
We all started with different tools than we're using now for one reason or another.

That's a Oneway Wolverine "knock-off".
I have no firsthand knowledge
The Wolverine is $20 more

I know this may be a little early for some, but don't discount carbide tools.  I have a number of HSS and carbon steel lathe tools over the years and just started using carbide tools.  I especially like the Easy Wood parting tool.  Parting tools have a tendency to exhibit burn when used on very hard wood which is minimized with the carbide tools.
Just a comment.

I may be wrong but the wolverine ones for 20 more looks like it does not come with skew setup.

The pro grind looks like it has more versatility.

Of the two, I like the knock-off that has more functionality to it.
PS: I have Wolverine.

Thanks for the input .... That's the way I'm leaning.. I am hoping someone that has the pro grind will chime in. While all the functionally of pro-grind makes sense to us .. Everyone seems to have the Wolverine

I've had my Wolverine so long, there we're no knock offs when I bought it.
The only thing I would pay close attention to is material thickness (gauge of steel) and build quality.
The wolverine is built very well IMO, I never had any concerns about it

It looks like a decent system but without seeing them side by side I couldn't say one way or the other.

Of course "knock offs" are cheaper.  No research and development cost experimenting with designs, materials, and methods of assembly - just copy a good product.  The copy cats do not create new products, and take revenue from companies that do, so there is less research and development and fewer innovative new products.

I started out with the Robert Sorby 6 piece turning set.  I have used all of the tools in the set.  It's a good set to start with and you can add additional tools later on as needed.
