What to get the Turner Who Has Everything for Christmas?
Nov 13th, 2020 at 12:15pm

Well, not everything.  No Robust lathe or gold plated chuck.  I'm the kind of guy who buys stuff when I decide I want it so when my significant other asks me what I want for Christmas I don't know what to tell her. What are some suggestions for "nice to have" items for a turner's shop with no more space for floor or bench tools?  I know you don't know what I already have but let's say I have most of the "normal" stuff.

I don't know what you like to turn but either ask for some special wood or a gift certificate to somewhere like Cook Woods (that's always a winner in my house)

After 56yrs SWMBO and I do not exchange gifts. When either wants/needs something we get it (not without discussion). 7 mo. ago I got a REVO 15/24.  My, early, Christmas indulgance was a Glaser Stocksdale gouge. Put something on the list that is just a little out of normal range. A set of larger Forstner bits. How bout a chatter tool. Cheesy

How about the ultimately accepted gift - cash!  Right size, right color, easy to carry.  Only complaint is it might not be enough, but such is life  Wink

How about a hollowing system with the camera option.  Pretty cool!  Smiley

Hmm, wood is always good because we never have enough... Best Christmas present I ever bought myself was my first lathe, my second, third, fourth, and fifth lathes.... Sold the first one.

The multi rest is an option.
I had never heard of Glaser tools. Pricey little boogers.
Hollowing system maybe in a few years. Don't currently do very much deep hollowing.
Better forstner bits could also be an option.  Mine are not very good but functional.

Living With Wood by Dr. Seri Robinson (a.k.a. Dr. Spalt).  Subtitle is "A Guide For Toymakers, Hobbyists, Crafters, and Parents."

Chapters include wood anatomy, wood in kitchen, wood in toys, cleaning wood, finishing wood, and more.  Appendix I lists 28 woods that should not be used for teething toys (and some may cause skin contact issues for wood workers).  Appendix III is end grain macro and micro photos of a number of woods, for occasions when trying to identify a piece of wood.

Very readable.  I have no financial or personal interest.

This time of year I'll typically send my year a dozen or so links that include the whole gambit of types of things I need or use.  I go through between two or three pairs of the same brand of gloves per year...those are almost always part of my stocking stuffers.  But I've also shown my wife all of my on-line wood blank sites...those sites that I 'treat' myself from only every now and then because of the costs.  I purposely try to keep the wife away from buying tools...too many examples of "I thought you'd like this one" more.  So sometimes I'll simply purchase something and tell her what she gave me.

If I had the cash for it, I'd pick up Robo Hippy's Robo Rest for the Oneway system especially now that his items won't be available past New Years.  God I hate having to adjust the angle of my grinding platform for my knock off sharpening system and I haven't seen another platform like his.

Gary

Having used a Robo Rest for years I can say it is worth every penny - substantial savings in time, and I don't hesitate to sharpen.  I just ordered the jig version so I will have one of each.  Couldn't imagine going back to my Mike Darlow guides to adjust a platform.
