My lathe arrived today

My Jet 1221VS arrived a couple of hours ago. I’m excited and ready to start having fun, but will wait until the stand shows up before pulling it out of the box.

Undoubtedly, Jet 1221vs is the best machine out there. Do not listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. As much as this lathe has a cult following, it also has its share of detractors who do not have an idea of the quality of this product in real time. These people haven't actually used the product and rely on mediocre online reviews.
I bought it this year before the lockdown happened, many people had argued against it but I did my research and was clear as to what I wanted. Luckily stumbled upon a site with authentic reviews and product ratings which helped me make my decision. Will leave a link below if anyone wants to check it out. And by the way, Congratulations!

Welcome aboard Anthony.  If you haven't yet discovered, there are a large number of turning videos on this site that were previewed to make sure there were no examples of unsafe or not recommended practices.  View Youtube videos with caution, unless the demonstrator was recommended by a reliable source.

Woodcraft told me that the stand for my lathe will not be shipped until January. That’s the stand that was listed as in stock and shipped to me within 5 days. Angry
So I went to Home Depot and bought a workbench/cabinet to use until my stand comes in.
The first bowl I started on went flying  : can’t call it a bowl anymore. The second attempt went better so, I have my first bowl.
I started a third bowl and got a bad catch and lost a big chunk from the side. Now it will be a shallow bowl  ;.
I’m just using some free wood that I cut from the trees in my yard.

Congragulations on the new lathe Lee.  My first bowl attempt was a disaster.  I was using the wrong speed, tools, techniques and pretty much everything else.  I bounced it off the floor and wall several times before a catch finally broke off the tenon.  I decided I needed help.

I joined a local woodturning club and got some good instruction from veteran turners.  That and several $,$$$ later for the proper tools and I can crank out bowls now.  Ok, I probably got carried away with the tool buying (according to the wife) but having the right tool for the job is important.  I also can't express how important the proper hands on instruction is.  Even a basic course at your local woodturning store will get you on the right path.

Welcome to the never ending vortex of woodturning.

The problem is that there are no woodturning stores in my area.
There’s a woodturning club in Hammond LA. But that’s 30 miles from me. Right now they are not having meetings due to COVID-19.
So, I’m watching videos and doing some reading and playing on the lathe.
Here’s what I’ve done so far. From right to left, #1 the one that flew and cracked. #2 the first bowl. #3 the second bowl.

Nice ... looks like you will be a master turner in no time... I have a few projects I need to finish for Christmas .. . To be honest the lathe was an impulse buy and could have waited. Did not need to get started with another learning process right now. I am just going to get the fundamentals down in the little time I have right now.
