I can not find anchor seal locally, to have it delivered would be 45 bucks a gallon. I can get  2 gallons of Rockler Green Wood End Sealer for that price. Has anyone used the rockler sealer, is it any good?

Rockler's Green Wood End Sealer is Anchorseal 2.   If you click on the link for the SDS for Green Wood End Sealer (under Technical Documents at the product link below), the SDS for Anchorseal 2 comes up; so it's the same product with the Rockler brand name on it and at a better price than the Anchorseal brand name.  See: Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

The sealer i have I think is the second generation anchorseal and it is blue.

The main problem is that that blue stuff gets onto everything.

It doesn't matter how many months or years passes, pick a piece up and it is all over your gloves or shirt if you happen to hold it against your body.

Tho it does work, it is really nasty stuff for that reason.

For what its worth I don't typically  use either of these, instead I use ordinary white wood glue on the end grain. I slather it on and let it dry, sometimes it takes a day or two to set up.  Works well for me!

Just to throw this out...

Heard of just using paint.

Pros or cons?

A month ago I tried a sealer that was based on yellow or white glue.  Trying to brush it on found much much more drag than Anchorseal.  It was so much more time consuming to brush on I gave the rest to another turner.

Don't know whether it was a  better moisture block.  I'm only sealing the ends of sections of log for a few days.

Perhaps someone is curious enough to design a little experiment to compare consumption and effectiveness of the two.

Paint works but many times may take more than one coat and often isn't viscous enough to maintain a good seal
Glue works but can be more expensive, may not have the temperature range and as mentioned has application issues for some.
Anchor-seal and it's clones have wax as part of their formulation which helps with all of the above issues.
There are several varieties of AS to fit most needs.

My experience is that Anchorseal2 is less effective than the original formula.  One coat of the original anchorseal is all I need.  I find it's equivalent to two coats of AS2 or white glue.

If you would share some details, John how is Anchorseal 2 not performing as well as AS 1, and what are you using it on (log ends, rough turned bowls, other)?  I use A S 2 on log ends until I can saw into blanks for once turned bowls, and often there are pre-existing cracks in the end grain that I will try to fill with the sealer while brushing it on.  Occasionally a few days later I will find an open crack in the end grain, but it is infrequent.  Seldom is it as long as a week before I break down the log into turning blanks.

Once or twice I tried to brush on a 2nd coat of A S 2 after the first had dried, and the dried wax surface would not accept any additional sealer.

Klingspor sells sealer and it works just as good or better than anchorseal. I think shipping is free or very cheap if you get 4 gallons.

Ralph, I've had good luck with 2 coats of oil base paint, or 5 coats of latex. Garage sales can be your friend.
