Greetings from Upstate South Carolina

Good evening, all-I just started turning last summer. Having come from restoring and rescaling old straight razors, I wanted to make some matching shaving brushes. So I spent most of the last 6 months learning spindle turning on shaving brush handles, duck call bodies, and dozens of pens. I'm now slowly learning to turn bowls. Fortunately, my son and neighbor are arborists, who regularly bring home interesting wood, so I've got plenty of turning stock.

I look forward to learning from and interacting with you experienced turners. Aaron

Welcome!   You sound pretty experienced already!    I’ve been turning for three years but haven’t done a pen yet.  Undecided

Where in the upstate?  I'm  live in Greer.     I make bowls    but  have only turned  185 bowls  in  6 years.

Thanks for the welcome, all. Robert, I have to admit that I screwed up a significant number of those pens (plus many of the kits are so cheap and fiddly), and don't enjoy pens as much as other turning jobs.

Rick, I live on the Eastside of Spartanburg, just up I-85 from you. Brittany at Woodcraft in Greenville helped us get set up to start this hobby-I don't know if you ever go there. As for bowls, I have watched about a gazillion videos and learned many hard lessons, but my cuts are slowly getting smoother.

One epiphany for me that I finally internalized was locking the gouge into my torso, locking the tool down on the tool rest, and learning to drive and steer with my body instead of my hands-made all the difference.
