Finishing live edge bowls and turnings
Mar 19th, 2021 at 9:57am

I do lots of live edge turning. Finishing the voids and uneven surfaces is challenging. Is it maybe time to invest in HVLP set up, for spraying finish. Looking for thoughts for others.
Thank you

What type of finish are you looking to spray, lacquer, shellac, poly?

Old Delta 12" 46-701 in great condition. Had it about 20+ years and turned 1 part.

The live edge bowls that i have turned Steve are finished with gloss wop. I mount on a faceplate and turn the outside rough and the recess for mounting. Then reverse it to the chuck and rough out the inside. Then i use a brush and load the bark up with the wop and let it dry overnight. Then turn the inside and outside to finish, sand and apply the wop on the lathe running staying away from the bark. Their not used with food and my lathe limits the size, but i'm satisfied with the results since the wife uses them for whatever she stands in them Smiley

Looking to really be able to use any finish. The wipe on poly does a great job. Also turners juice I mix.

I buy small foam brushes from Amazon. I have had good luck with them reaching into hard to get to areas of my live edge bowls. I don't use sprays, but they are perfect for the liquid finishes I use. I get 120 brushes for $17.00 Good luck

When I stopped living in the problem and began living in the answer the problem went away.
