How to kill a bandsaw blade
Apr 10th, 2021 at 9:21am

So I was minding my own business, cutting some maple into long blanks for tops.  My last piece was a chunk of ash.  It started cutting fine, then all of a sudden it didn't want to cut any more.  I powered through and then it got worse.  When it was finally done A glint of silver caught my eye.  Dagnabit!! Great googley moogely! Horsefeathers!  were just a few of the oaths emitted from my mouth.  The gray coloring should have been a clue but it was the last piece of the day.

Yet another reason to use the Lennox bimetal blades. It won't ruin them, only slow them down a bit, and they can be resharpened. Been there, done that, more than once... Finding a ceramic insulation thing is worse.... Sparks!

I use a good bit of urban wood on the lathe. Probably the most interesting thing I have ruined a bandsaw blade with was a key ring with two new Chevy keys. Just a couple inches off the pith in a twelve inch log. Came from a Chevy dealers lot. Always wondered what became of the car these keys were supposed to go to.

On the bright side the wood had outstanding spalting and coloring. The tree had been dead for a couple years before they had it removed.

Cutting bowling balls in half also works good for killing a blade.

Rusty, May I ask why one would cut a bowling ball in half?

The better question is ... Why wouldn't you??  Shocked Grin

If you had an old ball and always wondered what was inside, what better way than cutting it in half.

Most likely a carbide bandsaw blade would work fine. Smiley

Old age & issues have taught me to be patient, BUT!, sometimes ya just gotta.  Two wks ago.  Three pcs of very wet fresh cut 5 dia x 18" free wood. I no longer do bowls so I split and cut long blanks to turn cylinders, coat the ends and date. With a 1/4 x 6dpi blade! By time I'm done a butter knife would have been sharper. Yesterday rec'd new 1/2 x 3 dpi blade, install and test cut, Whoopeee! Decide to crosscut a wet 5 dia. Got half way and Shabam the new blade pops off the wheels & jammed in the log. Took an hour to free the blade which I saved and even though it bumps I remain determined to get my money out of it. Got some mullberry coming. Time I turn 80 maybe I'll learn. Roll Eyes

Dull blades are dangerous. I had 4 stitches from trying to get one last cut.... The ER is far more expensive than the new blade.

The ER is for 6 stitches and above.
4 stitches can be taken care of with duct tape.

Seriously, if you're starting to push too hard to make a cut, it's time to stop.
I'm with Reed, it's just not worth it.
I do try to always have a spare or backup blade to finish the project at hand if for some reason the blade I started with literally won't cut it.
Be safe everyone.

Smiley Smiley  Is it thick enough to make a flat large enough for stability?

By the way Rusty, thanks for your concern.

This one was. Some of the others are thinner on the color so I was thinking of parting off a piece on the bottom and gluing a piece of wood on it.
