Ed Weber WR Administrator WR Patron Offline Posts: 8,939 Wilton California USA Gender: JET 1642 Grizzly G0584	Less Toxic Jul 9^th, 2021 at 10:40am Do any of you use a low VOC or less toxic finish on your pieces, often labeled as organic or natural, There are many brands out there these days based on whey proteins, hemp oil, soybeans, etc. I was just wondering if there were any preferences out there. Thanks

I've been experimenting with pure raw tung oil. Due to its low viscosity it is more difficult to wipe on. After only 4 or 5 coats I've left a drink glass coaster with some condensation in it every night for at least a week, no sign of water damage. After seeing a brief article on line I sanded lightly with I think 320 a bowl with several coats, wiped on 2 additional coats. I think it is at least a satin sheen now. A week between coats, so it is much less convenient and more time consuming, but I believe the FDA lists pure raw tung oil as food safe, no questions asked.

This can take weeks sometimes. this is why tung oil finishes are thinned and have driers, with some type of poly resin added to aide in faster curing along with more sheen.

It's a water based lacquer. Which is OK if the temperature of the shop is over 60F and reasonably dry. Otherwise could get hazy finish or longer drying times. I have tried water based urethanes and dislike them! Glenn J.
