I am jealous.  I have recently been using some red cedar logs I have had sitting around for a few years to turn seed vases for all the mothers in my life for their special day.

It's that time of the year - - -

This morning, I swept up all of the sawdust and shavings in the shop, emptied the garbage pail, scrubbed the lathe bedways with 240 grit and rubbed in a little white lithium grease, cleaned and tightened the tailstock ram, polished the tops of the tool rests, and squirted some white lithium grease into the rollers on the garage doors.

Before it gets to be too cold for these chores - - -

I put a fresh coat of JPW on the jointer bed earlier. When I went out back to see if I had enough gas to mow the lawn tomorrow. The 10" jointer is too big for my tiny garage shop so it is in an out building. Still hitting 90F here every day. Winter will be here soon enough and it will only get into the 70's every day.  Wink

A walnut HF with an inlay, from an old tree, 23 inches DBH. It was a project to learn new techniques and took a while, stopping, starting, and some fiddly work I don't usually do. It has some subtle figuring and chatoyance in the right light, but it will likely darken into obscurity with time. The inlay is an attempt to provide interest when that happens. A bit tricky to do this on a curved surface, but it turned out ok.

Patrick, I see fresh flowers in your vases. Do you do anything to seal the inside so water can be added? Nice looking vases by the way.

Here's a solution I'm going to try: Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.   I've got them ordered.   They're about an inch in diameter and six inches long.   Because they're plastic they can be easily shortened if necessary.   The plan is to glue in vases to waterproof them.   We'll see how it works.

I have used some smaller plastic tubes, 12mm in dia rather than an inch (~25mm).

Picked up some really nice black walnut today. All kiln dried. The board pictured is 13" wide X 2 3/8" thick and 5+' long. Another one is 9" X 2 1/4" X 8' useable. The third one is 7" X 2 1/4" X 8' useable. Seller had 200bf and let me cherry pick the pile. Smiley

Test tubes, a great idea. Got them in my amazon cart for my next order. Thanks Chris and Robert for a great idea.

If memory is working, some of the woodturning supply web sites sell glass tubes for flower vases.  They may or may not be the same size as actual test tubes.
