Saw blade new verses sharpening
Oct 10th, 2021 at 3:28pm

So I have a few old great 10 and 12 inch 60 and 80, 90 tooth saw blades. Which I use to have sharpened. I am finding it is cheaper almost to just buy new blades.
Would like to know thoughts, sharpening is almost 30 bucks a blade.
The quality is not the same but also don’t stay as sharp as long but work great for sometime

That price seems high for sharpening. I found a local guy and when my blades came back, they were sharper than they were fresh out of the box. That included one of the Forrest blades.

This is the place I use

I mainly started using them because they are an authorized Freud sharpener, which is exclusively what I use. They also offer free shipping with five blades.
This works for me since I have a backup of every blade I use, you never know when something could happen and when it does, you can be sure it'll be at the most crucial part of the job.
I've had good service and the price is less than $30 per blade for most common 10 and 12 inch varieties.

I have a double miter chop saw in my shop and just sent out a set of 14" 100 tooth carbide blades to Connecticut Saw & Tool and paid about $32 per blade plus about $25 to ship them out.

They are cutting better than ever since I have had them sharpened by another company that went out of business.

Just to say that not all sharpening places are the same.
Very happy with my new place!! Smiley

Doubt that a Harbor Freight sharpener for  $55 would come anywhere close to what the pros can do.
Better to just send me that $55 as you will at least make someone happy!!

This is what I mean when I say that most modern saw blades have different geometry than a flat ground blade.  I'm sure the HF will work for rough cutting and low tooth count blades, it's just not for me.

A few months back I had two 14" cold cut steel cutting blades sharpened. With shipping two ways, I think 3 bad teeth replaced and sharpening it was in the $70 dollar range if I remember correctly. Dynamic Saw in Buffalo, NY.

The blades new are in the $100 range each so way cheaper than replacing. Still a lot of money in my opinion.

It's all up to each individual.
I know I can get several sharpening from my blades. I'm also one of those guys who actually changes their blade depending on what they're cutting. I have combination and general purpose blades but I only use them for shop projects or rougher work, not fine woodworking. All that to say, I don't abuse my blades.
Last sharpening for me was under $100 for the five blades I sent. Replacement cost would be about $350 (depending on where and when you buy)
So if I can get 3 sharpening per blade it saves me quite a lot.
YMMV

Thanks for posting Ed...I need to get both my Forrest table saw and CMT chop saw blades resharpened and now is as good a time as any.
