Laser engraver question
Jan 14th, 2022 at 1:09pm

For those of you who have one, could you please tell me, if there is any advantage to a Laserpecker (recognizable name) to another brand of similar design laser.
After reading the other thread and looking at some other options, it seems that there is at least one other laser engraver that is similar to the LP. Tripod mount and extremely portable.
I find the fixed head and moving laser to be much more convenient than the gantry type for my use, which is simply engraving name, date, logo etc.
Does anyone know of other small lasers like the LP that I should look at?
Thanks

I am very much interested in the same use case. The steerable laser looks much easier to deal with the variety of size things I would be interested in marking.

I’ve been using a 3watt laser to engrave my makers mark, wood type and date. Currently they are about $150.00 on Amazon. It works well. Because of the limited focusing, made the attached so I could print on objects of varying size.

They all come from over seas.  Possible from the same factory.  If you buy one off amazon that ships from amazon and is return eligible there is not much risk in giving one a try.  My biggest question with laser pecker is who came up with the name.  Grin It sounds more like the next Austin Powers movie title.

Yes, they're all very similar.
All the ones I'm interested in seem to have about a 100mm x 100mm engraving area and a 200mm focal distance. All the software is app based via Bluetooth. If there are differences, they're minor.

Been watching videos from this guy on how to use lightburn.  Heres a review on one of those non laserpecker units.

Thanks Chris, I've looking for some more content on these little things but since everyone calls them something different and they all have unfamiliar names to me, I don't see them all.
I appreciate it  Smiley

Update

I just got a LP1 Pro and was wondering if you could point me towards any forums that would be helpful for a new user.
The tool is simple enough to use, not rocket science, but just want to know the more common things, good and bad.
Thanks in advance

Been using it about a year well built and easy to operate.  Have found many uses for it besides signage.

Thanks Patrick
The main reason I opted for the Laserpecker style over a gantry style, is that it's portable.
I can take mine anywhere. I can set it on the lathe or any place else, at any angle I want to, without need for a large footprint. This means I can engrave on any size piece, not just what fits under the gantry.
Different strokes, as they say

I was just looking at the LP style when I realized (what must be obvious to anyone else) that the flat on the side is so that you can run it horizontally, potentially while a piece is still on the lathe. That's a nice feature, at least for me.

Seems like you might need to be even more careful about eye protection in that case, but that's sort of a given.

Yes, direction does not matter, so long as you keep the correct focal distance, which is 8" or 20cm. It has a standard 1/4-20 tread so it can be mounted to basically any tripod you like.
You could do the ceiling if you were so inclined.
It works for me

Ed - will you be posting any images or videos of your laser engraver in action? I'm very interested in replacing my illegible scrawl on my turnings with something that actually looks good (and is indelible  to boot), any experiences you have with it would be good to hear about.
