A Korean turner making a set of nesting bowls.

I can not be responsible for the lack of safety in this video (you'll see)

I noticed in one scene the tips of his gloves were a bit red.

Did anyone catch that suction cup he uses to hold the bowls while he applies a finish?

I think I actually found this one recently on You Tube. I do want to learn how to make and use hook tools.....

Sad thing for You Tube, they are starting to go the way of commercial TV, inserting more adds..... The advertising people don't seem to understand that they are destroying their market by overkill....

It can be difficult to actually find people who understand their craft.
The turner in this video knows every aspect of his entire work process form start to finish. An anomaly on YT these days.
Too many know just enough to fool the masses but suffer from the illusion of explanatory depth. Which simply means they think they know more than they do.
Youtube caters to content creators (personalities) not the content that can be created.
Sponsored ads and commercials generate revenue, that's all that matters.

What I'd like to understand is how he used the hook to cut on the up side of the bowl without the tool rising? Can anyone explain??
I think he is safer than most because he stands facing the end of the lathe. I'm with Robo hippy about learning to use a hook tool. He made it simple to use.

Many turners form this part of the world turn in both directions.
Don't assume that the lathe is running in a typical western anti-clockwise direction.
This turner uses clockwise rotation, making some otherwise normal tasks look awkward or weird.

I'm Guessing the part you're talking about is about 4:30. At this point he is using the tool in a shear cutting or slicing orientation. Not much force to push the tool up when presented this way. He only cuts when he draws the tool toward himself. You have good control when performing this type of pulling cut

Imagine how long to learn how to use all the different hook and scraping tools and how to fabricate.

A facinating aspect of turning. Japanese hook tools of HS steel, hand made, spinning backwards,... Then the "Russian?" triangular arrow point shape. Is there something out there I've missed? Would like to master them all but it took 50yrs to get comfortable w/English stuff. Saw a guy turn a spindle with a hatchet. (Tried it, it works. Practical, not so.) But then i never conquered the skew. Tongue MOE
