Work Habits
Jun 20th, 2022 at 4:01pm

I know everyone has different work habits and I'm not trying to change anyone's method of work .
With that said, I have a couple of questions.
Do you use a cell phone in the shop?
If so, do you think this is necessary?

Does everything we use need to be battery operated?
Do you use your phone so much in the shop that it needs to be charged during the course of the day?

I know this might be good in an emergency but using a battery to charge a battery starts to get a little crazy. At some point you need an actual power source, not just a storage device.

No phone, or radio for me. Just the music my tools make.

I bring my phone with me in the shop only for emergencies.

I just replaced my cell phone this month because it was 6 years old and started to have problems with GPS and Squareup. I needed to charge it every 8 days, it used to last 14 days between charges. This new one seems to last only 7 days between charges

I also, just this past month, upgraded from a several years old phone.
I still don't use it in the shop.
I have it out there with me but it's more for alerts (fire season) and other little things. I don't call or text unless necessary.
I've never drained a phone battery by use, it's always letting it sit too long that does it.

I put my phone in a bowl on the workbench.  It's there for emergencies (of course I could probably get to the house easier and faster than trying to one hand the phone if something went wrong) and if the wife needs me.    I have a radio but can't hear it over the power tools and dust collector.  Lot of times its for the weather.  That charger & others like it seem like something for the gadget person.  Only use I could see if you are on a multi day hike/trip with no electricity.

I used to do that.

After three days sitting in a bowl by its lonesome my daughters franticly called their mom "Is Dad OK, He Hasn't Replied To My Texts!", "Is Everything Alright!", "Is He Sick!", "Why Won't You Tell Us What's Wrong!"

Then when they found out I left it in the shop for that long they got really mad at me for being so inconsiderate.  Grin

I leave it in my back pocket now. I tell them it's practice for the future when I fall and can't get up.

It's funny, they never considered calling on the land line. (Yes we still have one.)

Well, I do have my cell phone in my shop with me. I don't use it. Seems like I get mostly spam calls anyway.... I do have the radio on constantly, and generally kind of loud......

My cell phone is in my right front pants pocket. almost always. In the shop ,it's for emergencies. No music. Haven't found a music box that will hold up to the dust.
Side note: if the charger cord will not fit into the phone, clean the dust out of the socket.  Grin Grin Grin

My Bose radio works fine in the dusty confines of the shop. Smiley

I use my phone in the shop so Alexa can turn on and off my dust blowers and air filter.  Also have a 10" Tablet to hold samples of what I am working and such things as the Raffin book I recently got on Amazon.  Plus my segment calculator.

Patrick

I highly recommend all the Raffan books and dvd's.  And a few months ago he uploaded a number of short videos to Youtube.  But pay attention to all the comments he makes, not just the long explanations.  Lots of gems in those individual sentences.

I agree on Raffin. My favorite is the one where he purposely does catches.  I made my own Raffin skew out of HSS steel purchased on Amazon.  I am currently considering changing the angle from 45 to either 40 or 50 since I use a roborest which I consider the greatest invention since ice cream. Any thoughts?

A Youtube video by Brian Havens experimenting with different skew sharpening angles on the skew was very well done.  He has a number of videos, I don't know the title of this one.
