I want to do a 6in dia- 3ring-  12 segment bowl with vertical lines and nothing between the rings. vertical lines will be 1/4 wide with 3 colors, trying to line up colors all the way down. what are going to be my problems. I have done a lot of segment bowls but never with vert lines

Are you repeating your vertical lines or just putting them in 1 time? A lot of options are there to be used

I want to make a board about  5x12 out of 3  ( 1/4 in wide )  color strips like brown-red-white. Then cut a 1in-3/4-3/4 wide strips 12in long. then cut my segments out of each board. glue them into about 5in circles. stack them so the colors line up and then glue those rings together. then turn into a bowl where all the brown strips, red strips, white strips line up vertically. I am thinking of only 3 ring bowl to see how it works

Why not go with stave style design? Would assure lines align.

It sounds like you plan to glue up a board of 1/4 thick strips, where the glue joint is perpendicular to the long dimension (like in the pic). Then you would cut strips from that parallel to the long dimension and use those to cut ring segments from. If I have this right (questionable, I'm sure) I don't see how you can get all colors of the various segments to line up vertically. Cutting the angles to make the segments glue up to a ring will give you varying widths at the edges of each segment, and that alone would prevent precise alignment. It might still look alright.
But if you want vertical lines of color, I think you need to go staves.

Staves have the grain direction running vertical, segments have the grain direction running horizontal.

How did you make that drawing?

I use Sketchup, which is a 2d drafting program with some 3d features. For flat work it's perfectly useful, which is what I use it for. For turning I don't think it's very practical.
I use the last free desktop version (2017), but there is a free web version available. I have no idea how the web version stacks up, and I'm not sure you can find the 2017 version around anymore.

Thankyou all very much for the information I found it very useful. I think I will try a straight up and down stave cylinder and see what happens. Once again thankyou for all the info. Cheesy

There are many ways to use staves when segmenting, most of the time you see them used in vases and tall vessels like these, but they're just examples, You build what ever you want, good luck

those are awesome. OK, i guess Iam math-challenged I looked all over for a stave bowl cheat sheet, but all I found were a bunch of formulas I didn't understand. I use (cdelker.bitbucket.io/segment ) for all my bowls. It gives you everything you need to build a bowl. Is there anything like that for a stave bowl or vase? I want to make a stave bowl
2in at bottom- 8in at top- 12 sides-6in high. Is there an easy way to figure out wood pieces?

You need to find a compound miter calculator that you can understand.
There are many out there, some are easier to use than others, depends on what you need.
Here is one I've used
