Never tried that before. I suggest testing on a scrap piece and letting us know how it works

How big is the project?

I've used brushing lacquer as a wipe-on finish on smaller items. I use what is basically a lacquer-based sanding sealer - 1:1 brushing lacquer (I use Watco because that's what the store sells) and lacquer thinner. I apply several coats, abrading with a gray Scotch-brite pad between coats. The stuff dries fairly quickly - about a minute or so - so it doesn't take long to build up a nice coat.

I also make a friction polish from brushing lacquer, lacquer thinner, and Tung oil that I use on pens and bottle stoppers, and even small hand mirrors.

Might be more of a problem on larger items like bowls.
