What am I? Well, that depends upon when. I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve done many things in my brief life. I’ve owned small businesses, earned undergraduate and graduate degrees, lectured in Anthropology, Archaeology, and Geography in universities and colleges. I’ve worked as a professional archaeologist, hydrologist, cartographer, photogrammetrist, and telecommunications engineer.

The 26 years immediately prior to my “downsized” retirement in 2001 were spent as a gypsy telephone engineer designing outside plant for various telcos across the U.S.

How’d I get into wood turning? After being “downsized” I found myself at “lose ends.” Wife and I went to a travelling tool seller’s show where I spotted a wood lathe w/tools for $59.99. I bought it, set it up, and put tool to wood. That was fun! I’ve been turning wood eversince.

What kinda turner am I? I’m a P.O.W.S. That’s plain, ol’, wood spinner. I’ve never had an interest in the really “fancy” stuff. I really like the look and feel of wood so I don’t mess with it much. My pieces are mainly pretty, NW, woods that are nicely turned and finished. I tend to use either no finish at all or a “natural” finish. I do use wipe on poly for pieces that need to be fluid resistant.

I also do other turnings such as handrail and other balusters, furniture parts, spinning wheel parts, etc.

My turnings have been well received in some parts of this world. I have pieces in 23 of the 50 States and six countries.

So there ya have it.
