I'm fascinated by beautiful and unusual
woods, especially
burls, spalted woods and exotics. And I like to make beautiful and
unique things.
20 some odd years ago I began collecting exotic wood and dabbling in
woodturning. This took second chair to earning a living until
I
retired in1999. Then I moved to the northwest and bought a
ShopSmith and starting turning in earnest. Big stuff mostly.
I
don't like working with green wood so I concentrated on dry maple and
mesquite and kept on collecting wood.
Then a club member introduced me to miniatures and I got a small Jet
lathe and discovered that you could make beautiful things out of small
pieces of wood as well as large. Here was a way I
could get
full measure of the beauty of many of the small pieces I had collected
over the years. Turning smaller pieces also allowed me to
experiment . . . with different forms, methods of segmenting, unusual
edges, etc.
Now, some 1400+ pieces later, I'm still collecting wood and
experimenting with different forms and techniques and enjoying turning
more and moreā¦
