Notes for Hollow turning videos #2 & 3 - right angle tool Just a few quick notes as you can't get everything from a video. If you look carefully at the tool positions in these two videos, you will notice that I start with the tool pointed down to the 7:30 position or so. This is to make contact with the wood in the least aggressive position. After the initial contact is made, I slowly rotate the tool towards the 9 o'clock position where the more aggressive cuts take place. To take a lighter or smoother cut, simply rotate the tool back down. Most of the cutting action takes place at the tip, however I grind my hollowing tools into a rounded shape much like a round nosed scraper so that light side cuts can also be made. This helps with the initial roughing in that cuts can easily be made in the forward and backward motions. have fun & enjoy!
