Winged Bowl

Description}: My first winged bowl. Approx. 11" x 8" with a 7" diameter bowl. Finished with Watco Danish Oil. Wood is unknown. It was found by the road. It was likely an ornamental that got too big. The wood had bright red heartwood that dulled to orange when turned. Wood is rather soft. The piece used was a little oddly shaped, hence the bark inclusion and sapwood down the middle of the bowl. Bowl is turned thin (too thin). Sanded through a spot on the rim and had to repair. Almost sanded through the bottom and made a winged funnel. As such, it doesn't sit right since I couldn't get the bottom flat. It was fun and I learned much in making it.

Walnut Platter

Description}: Walnut platter ( approx. 10" x 12") with natural edge. Much of the bark was off before I started turning. The rest was removed after turning. Finished with walnut oil finish. Cracks along some of the annual rings were filled with coffee/CA and/or stick shellac.

Description}: This box is for my niece Olivia. My wife made a cross necklace for her baptism and wanted a nice box. For some reason, she asked me to make one... Box making is something I am not very good at but this one turned out nice, IMO. Probably the best one I have ever made. The wood is some random exotic cut off I found in the basement. The original block was much longer and had a big crack in it. Probably why I got the wood for near nothing.

BOW Gentleman's Pen

Description}: Three BOW Gentleman's pens. Two of them are for the vacancy pastors that served at our church while we tried to find a new one. The third pen is for our new pastor. One of the pens has a strip of ebony in the middle. This was needed because my barrel trimmer severely damaged the end of the blank. Since the cutoff was not quite big enough, it needed the ebony to salvage the project. Finished with BLO/shelac mixture.

Manzanita Moon

Description}: Manzanita pen for Moon. When I got the blank, I noticed it had some fairly severe cracks. Some were near enough to the center I knew I would not be able to turn them out. I conversed w/Moon via email and he said go for it. So I did. There were a bunch of cracks in the finished pen. I did a coat of BLO/CA first to try to keep the cracks the under control. Only time will tell if this worked. Top coats were a mix of shellac and BLO. IMO, this pen turned out better than I thought it would. I had never turned manzanita before. It was a joy to turn and I thank Moon for the opportunity to turn it. Enjoy!

Laura's Bowl

Description}: Finally got back to some turning! Bowl Specifics: Tiger Maple 8 3/4" diameter Minwax WipeOn Poly finish Laura is the daughter of one of temporary Pastors at church (our church is looking for a new pastor after the last one left...). She was in a terrible car accident last September and suffered a head injury. She has required extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. Another local church is holding a benefit to help cover some of the medical costs. This bowl and two pens will be part of a Chinese Auction at the benefit on Friday.

Box Elder w/Brazillian Rosewood finial

Description}: Box turned out not quite as wide as planned. I did get a good fit with the lid. Finial is a bit tall and is glued back together where it broke. The box elder had some cracking issues. One was my fault, the other likely came with the wood. Since coffee would have looked bad as crack filler, I experimented with pastel chalks and CA. Worked out well. Total height 7 3/4".

Spalted Maple Bowl

Description}: 9" Spalted Maple bowl. Finished with Deft semi gloss lacquer. Salvaged from a heavily spalted tree that should have been taken down years ago. The tree was totaly rotted above 8'.

Natural Edge Cherry

Description}: 6" natural edge cherry bowl. Finished with Deft Satin Lacquer (spray). Bark was superglued to help it stay on. It stayed on very well, except where I touched it with the elec. drill (while spinning) during sanding. Note to self... don't do that again.

Description}: My dad made this for mom in celebration of thier 40th anniversary. Total Segments: 476 (feature ring has 256) bubinga, wenge, holly and redheart. 7" high, 12 3/4" diameter, 5/16" thick. Finished with AquaCote Waterbase Finish. 75 hours to complete. Based on design from Malcom Tibbets' latest book.

Description}: Slimline 10k gold pen & pencil. I made these for a friend of mine. His duaghter just graduated high school. Although its difficult to see in the pix, the rosewood has some beautiful black swirls in the grain.

Fibron pen

Description}: Fibron is a man made material similar to plywood. The wood plys are dyed are impregnated with a resin. Unlike plywood, he plys go in the same direction. This stuff is very hard and not the easiest stuff to turn. It gets very hot when during drilling and often cracks. After sanding, 3 step buffing give it a great shine.

Description}: Apple from my inlaws back yard. 6.5" diameter. Finished with Minwax Wipe On Poly. The Minwas was suppose to be satin finish but came out very shiny (I'd hate to use their gloss...) A few small cracks appeared during drying. I used coffee to fill them so you can hardly tell.

Black Locust bowl & spoon

Description}: Black locust bowl (3") and spoon. My wife uses this instead of the salt shaker I have yet to make. The spoon works well, especially for cooking. The slight burn mark in the spoon is from the Dremel I sued to finish the spoon. This is the first of many Black Locust bowls. Hard as nails but edge grain tear out is almost no existant. I'll take the good with the bad... Mahoney's Utility (Walnut) oil finish.

Description}: Cherry bowl, somewhere around 9" to 10" diameter. Rim is decorated with two grooves and burned lines. Sanded to 400. Finished with Mahoney's Utility Oil (Walnut oil) finish.

Description}: Practice spindle turned by my 7 year old daughter. This was here second turning lesson. Lesson 1 was roughing gouge. Lesson 2 was coves with a 3/8" spindle gouge. The spindle is unsanded and finished in water colors (I think)...
