This has been a memorable challenge :-( I've had my share of problems with your pen. I had never tried this type of kit. I didn't do a very good job of notching...lol. I also was nervous using one of the maple blanks you sent, so I used a larger piece of maple burl that my Dad had given me. I really should turn it again, but didn't have time. There is a small blow out that I didn't notice until after I had pressed it together :-(. I hope you enjoy this pen from a rank amateur! When I got the blank, I noticed it had some fairly severe cracks. Some were near enough to the center I knew I would not be able to turn them out. I conversed w/Moon via email and he said go for it. So I did. There were a bunch of cracks in the finished pen. I did a coat of BLO/CA first to try to keep the cracks the under control. Only time will tell if this worked. Top coats were a mix of shellac and BLO. IMO, this pen turned out better than I thought it would. I had never turned manzanita before. It was a joy to turn and I thank Moon for the opportunity to turn it. Enjoy!

5 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5967&title=manzanita-moon&cat=589 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5967&title=manzanita-moon&cat=589 Tue, 22 Apr 2008 00:46:13 +0000 Elk Antler & Copper by Smoky

by: ebudg

Description}: I sent a copper slimline kit & two pieces of elk antler to Smoky thinking that he'd never worked with either. Tom sent five blanks one of which was to be for his pen; it blew up. It was poorly poured. So I chose a very nice walnut burl blank, spun it round, and began assembly. The kit he sent was missing two parts. I e-mailed Tom, told him what had happened, and offered him a choice. This is what he picked. It's Mountain Mahogany made with a discontinued, Woodcraft,Classic American, kit. I figured for all the trouble I'd throw in a pencil as well.

6 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5962&title=a-set-for-smoky&cat=589 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5962&title=a-set-for-smoky&cat=589 Mon, 21 Apr 2008 04:25:45 +0000 Laurie's Cocabolo/malicite stone inlay

by: nodakday1

Description}: This is my forth cigar pen, what fun.

4 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5961&title=laurie-s-cocabolo-malicite-stone-inlay&cat=589 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5961&title=laurie-s-cocabolo-malicite-stone-inlay&cat=589 Mon, 21 Apr 2008 02:39:36 +0000 JimVH, C & T Pen

by: Chuck Beland

8 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5960&title=jimvh-c-amp-t-pen&cat=589 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5960&title=jimvh-c-amp-t-pen&cat=589 Sun, 20 Apr 2008 15:14:42 +0000 Designer/Euro for Leo.

by: JimQuarles

Description}: This is a piece of Spalted Oak Burl. The finish is CA 3x's, sanded down to 6000 with 2 coats of Shellawax. My main headache came from the center band. I had to make 3 before I was able to get the one I liked. The kit was a slim, so I decided to use larger bushings make it a thicker pen. Real nice in the hand. I hope you like it. Features Desert Iron Wood, angled cut, mostly heartwood with a splash of sapwood near the clip. The wood has the chatoyance of Curly Koa and the personality of Snakewood. It was a definite challenge, especially since the blank came from an arid region (Arizona) into Louisiana's changing humidity. With a couple of repairs, mission accomplished. Sealed with 2 coats of CA, Sanded through all grits of micromesh, Friction Polished, and treated with Renaissance Wax. Photo does minimal justice. www.perfectwoodworks.com

11 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5951&title=jimq-s-slimline-pro-gel-writer&cat=589 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=5951&title=jimq-s-slimline-pro-gel-writer&cat=589 Sat, 19 Apr 2008 22:46:02 +0000
