Sorry for the poor resolution; my camera was out of town. Box is made from Mahogany, Ebony, and Spalted Sycamore. Hollowed to 3" depth. Overall about 8" tall and 5" wide at base. Proportions not quite right. Wanted to be more tapered, but to keep the grain orientation had to keep it thick. Learned a lot from this challenge, especially to use a less busy grained wood. C&C welcomed! www.perfectwoodworks.com

9 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=7689&title=bob-s-lighthouse-box&cat=632 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=7689&title=bob-s-lighthouse-box&cat=632 Fri, 22 May 2009 05:49:04 +0000 CT Challenge

by: wheels4

Description}: Hackberry box 3 1/2 by 4 tall can lift by lid and it doesn't come but no pot either. Finished with 6 coats of Danish Oil and then Beall Buffed with all 3 wheels. I used the 24 indexes on my lathe and a drilling jig for the spiral of holes and I used the Sawzall blade parting tool (thanks guys!) to try and maintain the grain match. The finial is three pieces of Walnut epoxied together (with a tiny squeeze-out that I am bummed about). Squeaks pretty good pulling the lid off. I hope you enjoy Brendan! Finish is sanding sealer with carnauba wax (applied with the Beal 3-On buffing system). I choose a simple form for my first "lidded-box", thinking that the inlay in the lid and the use of the collar would add interest to an otherwise simple piece. The vertical red striations help to align the grain.
