It was from a tree that was outside the school that my wife works at. The tore down the old building to make way for a new one. This was from one of three stumps I picked up. I'm not sure what tree it is but I don't think it is native. It did make some nice bowls though. Some of the wood looked very much like oak, smelled a bit like oak. I have some of the wood that had a pinkish tint to it that made some really nice looking birdhouses too.
The the wood for the globe came from wood very close to a burl so it has some interesting figure on one side. I found it rummaging through waste scraps making blanks for birdhouses.
Sorry the picture is so terrible. I'll maybe have to try again. These light colors on light backgrounds don't so up well for the camera's auto focuse and the manual focus is hard to use.
I should "borrow" my daughter's camera more often.
