About 8" at widest point. My daughter brought me this root ball from an old dead box elder that she picked up where she works. She works at the Ogden Nature Center and they're having their annual dinner/auction to raise funds. I turned this to donate for the auction. It's very natural edged especially the bottom. The bowl is off center because that was about the only spot thick enough and not rotten where I could mount it on the lathe. It's a little heavy to one side but still sits on the foot without rolling over. Finished with deft and briwax.
Very nice. Must have been fun turning that. The offcenterness (is this a word???) adds a lot to the piece. I don't think it would look as good if you turned it centered. Nice job. I'm sure this will fetch some coin for the Nature Center.
Curt, that sure is a nice looking "root bowl", and the satiny smooth finish is fine. Using a root like that was a great idea for showing a rugged natural edge, and a well shaped bowl and foot. The grain swirls and colors are beautiful.
