Some talk about burl caps got me to finally throw this on the lathe and just make something out of it. Big Leaf Maple that I hoped to save the spikes on, but it just wasn't in the cards I guess. It's dyed black (heavy around the edges), red and yellow. The pedestal is from another piece of scrap maple burl. 7.5" tall x 7.5" wide at the rim, 1/16 thick and finished with tung oil and nervously Beall buffed. All comments are always more than welcome and thanks for looking, Don
Great job turning and with the dye. I always get bleed though on something that thin. I do not know about the junction of the pedestal and the bowl. It seems to draw my eye away from the bowl. It is porbably just me. Great job.
Don what a fabulous piece, makes you just want to pick it up & feel it all over, it is "alive", a real stunner, I can imagine you being nervous with the Beal wheel

Thanks for the comment, Peter. That was quite a nice compliment.
Roger, thanks also. I originally wanted to make the pedestal blend right into the bowl, but the bowl had some natural voids that would have left a gap/air space so I decided to go this route. Man, so many decisions for such a simple looking piece! Thanks for the comment.
