I started with a 4 1/2" cube of black walnut with the intent of making a hollow form. As I approached my final wall thickness I had some checks appear in the end grain faces, either from the heat generated while cutting or simply from the end grain drying too suddenly when it got thin. I decided to inlay some disks of contrasting woods to cover the checks. The inlay pieces are white ash, honey locust and maple.
Very nice Bob, just one more thing to add to what has already been said, I like the base. I assume you simply put a very shallow curve to relieve the "feet"
