Here's my throw top, figured myrtlewood, burned & colored like my Collage Series pieces. I was going for a form to resemble the "Lost in Space" robot with the thought that the colors would look like flashing lights when it spun. It is about 3" dia. x 4" tall.
WOW Chris, that's a really nice top man!!! it looks to have a natural wood tip... one piece of wood right? and what about the very top, inside that small circle, is it flat, or beaded, or concaved???
Beautiful top Chris. I especially like the way you just went with a wooden point. Good for inside use and nice looking too. Like the design but I'll bet it spins into a blur more than flashing. I also think that the lower profile of the wooden point might make them easier to spin. Mine may be too "top" heavy.
Hey guys, thanks for the kudos. The whole thing took all of 45 minutes to make including finish. Forgot to mention, the finish is Deft Satin spray. The color is Prismacolors. The thing is one piece, I thought it looked better than doing it with the point.
Junior - the very top part is flat (it's where it was parted off)
Ned - Actually it's harder to burn on the lathe. Get used to holding the pen steady in one hand and moving the piece in the other to get straighter lines.
